Dog-Eared Page and the Wandering Mind

“Between the logic of the most ‘absurd’ film and that of the dream, there will always remain a difference, because in the latter what is astonishing does not astonish and consequently nothing is absurd: whence, precisely, the astonishment and the impression of the absurd one feel on waking.” –Christian Metz

Nice

“To put it mildly it is the most blue thing I have ever seen. It is Disney blue; that perfect ideal that you think only exists in dreams or in fake landscaped theme park rides. Like some one dyed it all, or like it’s made of hand polished blue glass. It really is so beautiful that it is hard to believe it is real. And that is what France it to me, this surreal experience of pinch-myself-I-must-be-dreaming excellence.”

Smitten With Britain

“As I move on to Hull I’m met with mixed feelings. I am excited for what lies ahead, seeing my home, beginning school, meeting my hall, and everything else that lies in wait, but I have really loved London and I don’t feel ready yet to leave it behind. Granted my love is still in the premature, infatuation stage, where I only see her good and not her flaws. But still, as the title suggests, I am smitten with Britain.”

Down with the Sickness

“They call it “freshers flu” because everyone gets it the first week of school. Basically you have 16,000 students who have come from all over the green earth by way of germ infected airplanes, trains, and buses, only to meet together and swap airborne pathogens for a few days.”

Dublin

“Waiting for the tour was terribly exciting. I’ve always liked Guinness but after the previous days insight into what Guinness really tastes like I was just plain giddy. It felt reminiscent of finding a golden ticket in my candy bar wrapper. This place really was Wonka’s factory for the drinking aged.”

Weak from the Week

“So fast-forward to a week-and-a-half of sleepless nights of research, writing, coffee, more research, more writing, and an ungodly amount of more coffee. These nights were met by baggied-eyed mornings in which I still had to fulfill my normal schedule.”

The Melting Pot

“Tottenham, possibly even more so than Central London, is a hodgepodge of culture and people. By walking around, taking the bus, shopping in the grocery store etc, I have met people from Russia, Poland, South America, Vietnam, Jamaica, loads from Africa, even more from Lebanon, India, Pakistan, etc.”

Withnail & I

“I found solace however after watching Withnail & I, an English cult classic comedy about two out of work actors. I delighted to see them bundled in their own home, going out for tea and staying far too long just to enjoy the free heat, etc. And as I clanked around on the keys of my typewriter I couldn’t help but feel like I was actually living the English adventure I had imagined before I came.”

Arrival

“Outside I took in a deep breath of air and said to myself: “I’m in England. I am in bloody England!!!” For the first few minutes I couldn’t help but have this cheesy grin plastered to my face. I had arrived.”

Only Living Boy in New York

“New Yorker of course is the languageless language of the city. Typically it is all done with eye movement, head movement, or strategically placed fingers. I chose the head moving dialect. It occurred as I was exiting the Subway, I was heading to an elevator when a hard looking man all “thugged-out” in his Roccawear finest, put out his arm and held the elevator door for me.”
